Endometriosis Awareness Week 2nd - 8th March 2009
This annual event gives women with endometriosis a focus to raise awareness of endometriosis nationally and within local communities. Raising the profile of endometriosis also provides an opportunity to raise funds for research into better treatments. Please contact us on1 (868) 662 8344 to see how you can help.

Laser IVF treatment for Trinidad & Tobago
In February 2009, the Trinidad & Tobago IVF Fertility Centre will acquire a state-of-the-art laser system for use in the embryology lab.  The embryology team selected the ZILOS laser as it provides the highest level of flexibility, compatibility, and ease of use than any laser system available today for clinical embryology.  The laser will be used to perform a technique called ‘assisted hatching’ whereby a precise microscopic channel is etched into the shell of the embryo, to help the growing cells to ‘hatch’ once they are transferred to the womb.

One baby at a time
Octuplets, or eight babies, have recently been born in the U.S. following fertility treatment.  The Trinidad & Tobago IVF Fertility Centre has a policy of only transferring one or two embryos into the womb after IVF treatment.  This increases the chance of a single healthy baby being born without putting the mother at risk.  We avoid high order multiple births as such events have a high chance of premature birth and health problems for the sibling babies.

Vitfiication increases the pregnancy rate in Trinidad
A new method for freezing embryos has been introduced at our clinic.  The process is called vitrification and results in a higher rate of survival for embryos that are stored in liquid nitrogen. If a couple who have IVF treatment produce any surplus embryos, then these embryos can be safely vitrified for future use, while one or two embryos are transferred fresh to the womb.  The ideal scenario occurs when the transferred embryos result in the birth of a healthy baby.  If the couple then want a brother of sister for their baby a year or two later, then the vitrified embryos can be thawed and successfully implanted.  This saves the couple having to go through the whole IVF process again.
